I made a little progress just now by using the tone generator app (iPhone plugged into head unit) and found the buzzing/flapping vibration was maximised at 67Hz, even at volume level 1.
As soon as I placed a finger on the fuel vapour separator (rectangular plastic item in the centre of the rear compartment above the fuel tank, visible in the second photo above, with the green cap), the vibration stopped.
I tried stuffing various foam and polyester insulation between the plastic-backed carpet and the canister, which had little effect. Tomorrow, I'll take the spare wheel out and work on the bracket, adding foam rubber strips etc.
There are a number of other resonances elsewhere as the volume increases - it probably won't be practical to fix them all, but as long as I fix the worst of them, I'll be happy.
