Many systems reverse the direction of the motor to park the wiper off the screen. In other words when the wipers are running in continuous mode, they do't return to the parl position at one end of their stroke all the time, the working arc doesn't take them back to park. There is (was in older types anyway) a slide on the gear wheel inside the motor gearbox which gives a different stroke if the motor is run one way to the other. On parking the motor would reverse (you'd see this happen mid stroke) and then come to rest some way away from where they reverse when working continuously. Sorry if that's hardly any clearer. Diagramme needed!
