If discs are old, noises can be created by rust off the wiped surface and deeper lips - it makes 'inadvertant' contact with the pads more likely. You can get stones lodged around the place as well which can cause awful noises. I'd start by having a good look round with the wheel off - and spinning it maybe. You have the noise on lock more often because there is usually a finite amount of play in the wheel bearings - even if they are good, and cornering deflects the hub and suspension elastically. I had it on the Citroen at the back, only did it on left handers. Also try 'twanging' the dirt shield (tin thing like a dinner plate behind the disc - see if it clatters.
