I nipped in to a well known used parts place today. I was absolutely staggered by the prices the used parts guy wanted. The person I usually see, wasn't there today and this person was new to me.
I had three parts on the counter to buy ( two of the same item ). The prices I specify below come from a recent ( July 2013 ) version of ePer.
Part number 60577781 ( a bracket used for fitting the door card ). ePer price £2.96.
Part number 60597933 ( door hinge shim - two of these ). ePer price £2.52 each.
So, all told, the prices for new parts from AR ( if they're still available that is ) would be exactly £8 as of July 2013. That's including VAT.
The door shims were not even in as new condition. There was rust along the edges and I had resolved de-rust them, strip the zinc plating and re plate them before using.
And what did the used parts guy try and charge me for these three small, uncomplicated bits of steel?
£20 ( he did reluctantly come down to £15 ).
He even tried to tell me that the new price of 60577781 was just short of £9 new. Now, prices may have moved a little in the last year, but from £2.96 to £9? Err no. He also tried to justify the excessive prices by saying that they wouldn't be able to supply the hinge shims with the doors if they sold them to me. As if they supply shims with the doors anyway. I certainly didn't get shims with the replacement door I bought from the same place a few years ago!
I walked away.
The moral is : to avoid being ripped off, have a good idea of what parts cost new before you try buying second hand.
Anyway the main point to this post, if anyone has a spare door knocking about with one of these
bolted to it that I can buy, let me know. Ta.
