They are the bargain of the century at the moment. I paid £480 for mine, tax & tested. Although its got no service history and 170 000 miles its in great condition and has been trouble free for 2 years(kiss of death). Personally I think low prices are great. It means ordinary people can afford them and they don't end up being pampered in a dehumidified garage not being used or seen like the bertone gtv. They are a very usable everyday car.
Depends how you want to look at it. Lower prices also mean they get in the hands of people who don't take care of them and just thrash them about because they are cheap and don't really care. I mean for 480 quid even a 16 year old kid working after school at a supermarket could afford to buy one and go thrash it to hell. Then we wonder why so many are at breaker yards and are just generally in poor condition.
It is my belief that a lot of the stigma associated with the Alfa badge stems from this fact that cars like 916s are so cheap, especially in the UK, and this low price point unfortunately enables people who couldn't give two sh**s about the cars a chance to buy them. It is then these people who go and complain about how the car was unreliable and a typical Alfa and blah blah blah.
Not to mention that when most people buy an entire road legal car for almost nothing (i.e. similar to your price and the 916 prices in general in the UK) then they aren't going to want to spend 1k getting essential maintenance items done since they could just buy a whole other car (or 2) for that money! And that is the problem with these cheap prices. They just perpetuate a never ending cycle of deadbeats buying them because they look good and are cheap but don't want to spend a single penny on upkeep, especially with Alfa parts prices. They then on-sell them to similarly minded deadbeats and the car spends countless years in a cycle of neglect until an enthusiast (of which we are few when you look at the whole populous) come along and save the car and pump thousands and thousands into them.
So it really depends on how you want to look at it. I mean, I definitely get jealous of your UK prices as I want to buy another Alfa and when I see a GTV for 480 quid my head just about explodes!!! I paid the equivalent of about 4.5k Stirling for mine and that is actually relatively cheap for a GTV in this condition over here. But at the same time, I sure as hell don't want to sell a car in the UK, you get pretty much nothing for them because they are so cheap.
So the cheap prices are the bane of the 916's and Alfa's in general imo. They just depreciate far too much and unfortunately end up being neglected.
