Engine/gearbox storage.

I intend to store a spare spider engine & gearbox in one of those plasticcy garden storage boxes. Hopefully, I'll never need it, but at least it's there. Any tips in keeping it stored and kept in condition it goes in the box? As the water is drained off, will ferrous oxide be an enemy to the inner waterways?

Drain it completely of fluids. Use magic mystery oil or something similar in the cylinder bore and spray it down in WD-40.

I would have thought leave the oil in it and turn it over a number of times on the crank every few months. If you do keep the oil in it store it upright or oil enters the inlet manifold.Ive stored twinnys several years without issues.Im no expert its my own opinion.

It would be a better bet to drain the old engine oil and replace it with a real cheap oil for storage. Old engine oil will contain some nasties such as acids that would attack the alloy bits over time. I would also pour about a tot measure of the new oil into each cylinder.

Yes agree on this, drain and re fill engine with a cheap oil - slightly overfill and keep upright. Same for gearbox. A thimblefull down each plughole and re-fit plugs not too tight, but with greased threads. Block all open ports with oily kitchen roll or paper towel, with a bit of string around to stop it falling in, this will help to keep the innards from corroding. You can get a specialist spray used for agricultural equipment to cover the outside, if not an oily sheet or towel then wrap with some tarp or heavy plastic. Should then keep for years.
