The gear change problem will be the bush in the plastic housing located under the gear change gaiter. The housing cracks, and the metal bush moves; this causes the plastic clip on bush, that goes on the end of the ball joint, to drop out. You can replace the plastic bush but the housing is a bit of a bugger to change. I have a new one in my boot, I slapped some epoxy round my bush (finaw finaw) and been waiting for over a year for it to go again.
What you're after are items 4 & 9 in the ePer diagram, they are really cheap although I can't remember exact prices, item 4 was less than £2 and 9 about £18 I think. This is from a 156 V6 but it IS exactly the same for GTV V6. If you look at item 9 there is a moulded in metal bush that locates the spigot on item 16, held in with a circlip item 13. The housing cracks and the metal bush moves, as I say epoxy seems to work quite well.
