idler bearing and timeout story
I came very close to damage by postponing a belt and idler change after hearing the bearing grumble for a bit. Finally, the bearing locked close to home and the car limped in. Stupidly, I drove around to the garage and lucked out again.
For a project car, I bought a newish Lancia (Busso 24V) engine from Italy with only 600 miles usage. As the belt was totally new, I just used it for a few thousand miles. Then, last year I made myself change the eleven year old belt just because of time.
BTW, at one point, I found a recommendation from Gates on how long a timing belt could safely sit on a shelf. I recall the answer was 6-8 years. From experience, the years really go by fast. Don't buy a timing belt until the week of installation. With long projects, it is all too easy to purchase parts that timeout before assembly.
