916 Personalisation vs modernisation…..
Personalisation vs modernisation…..
Surely a controversial topic if ever there was one!
Are Alfa 916 owner’s purists or Halfords accessory shopping addicts….
What are generally acceptable “tweaks” to Alfa 916’s without going too far??
Wheels – 17” Teledials are arguably the best wheels for most & that’s why they hold their aftermarket prices £300-400. I know some prefer 18” and I can promise you the most comfortable ride will be 16” but do we care about comfort!
Steering wheel – I can see the point (in safety) of steering wheels audio controls but is there an easy fit, seems quite a challenge and I’m sure a decent write up is due by somebody in the know!
The steering wheel in general is not as chunky as more modern cars and styling is quite bland. I can see owners upgrading their wheels making them thicker and changing the shape/leather patterns and prices are between £100-200
Lighting – HIDS and LED sides are perhaps the best investment but I would suggest replacing the indicator bulbs all-round as the orange paint flakes over time (not bad for £25-£35).
Best experience with HIDS is with 35W Slimline Digital versions with HB3/9005 bulbs. As for colour/temperature of the bulbs, 4300K would seem stock but 6000K appears more modern with a hint of blue around the edges. More than that and you’re in danger of owning the wrong car!!
Exhaust – I’m sure a good number of owners prefer the sound of a ragazzon exhaust but I’m sure many prefer something quieter (or is that me showing my age!). Do you need four exhaust tips hanging below the rear bumper? Maybe we need a dedicated thread on the best exhausts for our 916’s?
Bodykit – keeping it standard or going for the Cup kit or after market kit. Even the rear spoiler is a discussion point no doubt. I couldn’t possibly make a comment here without upsetting a number of owners. Looks are personal and perhaps we’ll leave the gallery to the owners!
Audio Speakers – I don’t think anyone would disagree with how poor the stock audio system is.
Speaker upgrades are a starting point with 6.5” speaker replacements on the back shelf and in the doors using speaker adapters (CT25AR01) and a nice set of 13cm round speakers begins to resolve some of the sound problems. Don’t forget your speaker wire adapter cables – PC2-800. Adding an AMP is really straight forward as the battery is in the boot and very close to the rear speakers.
Audio Headunit – Another one of those “down to personal choice” labels on this subject.
I would suggest buying the CT24AR03 fascia adapter as the existing slot was designed for Alfa specific head units however, the slot size is a standard 1 Din shape and the adapter allows you to replace the head unit with a 1 DIN aftermarket unit.
Wiring on the other hand is a separate subject and I see debate about the power to the unit not being switched via the ignition.
You should also consider the aerial. Many have seen better days and being electric isn’t exactly modern at all. You may want to take a chance with DAB and install a dedicated glass fitting aerial. DAB is certainly the way forward regardless and there is a rough date of 2015 for the switch over but do your own research!
You are all very much welcome to add your own views or extend this thread with other suitable material for upgrades….let’s see where this goes! (please try to add specifics behind comments such as pricing or source)
