Even though my Spider has only done 20,000 miles since the last cambelt change, it was 4 years ago. With no record of a full service since 2010, I thought it best if she had the works.
Gareth at Northern Alfa Performance called me this evening after working on her all day. Good news, no rot, mechanically very sound.
Bad news, I was seconds from death at worst, or an engine replacement at best.
See the photos. In a perverse way I was really pleased to have found a new Alfa'ism. The front brake disk was cracked, from the back.... As if something had hit it from the middle of the car. Gareth tells me he has never seen or heard of this before. Firey death backwards through a hedge avoided !
Then he tells me the balance belt has been hanging off for a few thousand miles, has been rubbing on the cambelt and it was sheer luck that it didn't come off completely and cause firey death backwards through a hedge part two
The moral of the story is GET SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING TO SERVICE YOUR GTV/SPIDER AND CHECK THE CAMBELT REGULARLY!!!!!!
Don't think 'I will do it soon' - do it now!
Anyone had similar to these before?
