So have I!
And me. I bought my current car unseen 8 years ago. I wasn't far behind the winning bid for mr Bumble's GTV and another AOer asked me if i wanted to come and view their V6 Alfa having bid much the same as I had for Mr Bumble's GTV. In that case though they did remember a little scrape with slightly mismatched paint a day or so after, but I was outbid and happy about it. I think that car went to a good home.
I'd have happily bid for Operation Alfa's blue TS unseen, but Vela doesn't do much for me and black and grey interiors are a bit shoe shop to me. Would I have bid if it was Vela and tan? Possibly. I have no doubts that it was a spot on TS and a good price, the colour and trim combo didn't press my buttons. The trouble with Vela is that I'd always think Atollo blue is a nicer shade.
There's a GTV V6 I'd have bid for unseen a few months ago, but it was a classified sale. Those things are just an advert and don't even have a 'buy it now' icon on the screen do they? If it had a 'BIN' icon I'd have BINed it at the advertised price, even if the MoT history was a bit interesting. Something like 4 MoT attempts with shonky suspension issues over a couple of months.
I may have dodged a bullet with a 156 that may not have quite been what it seemed twice.
It's easier to weed out the auctions with 'hidden bidder IDs' and people that prevaricate about handing over the V5C or MoT certificate ref. because they've been scammed before, even though they've given a photo of both docs. in the listing but not big enough to read the numbers from them. I had to ask an MX-5 vendor three times for that information, looking through the MoT history, a previous advisory was surface rust to a later MoT advisory being 'Everything underneath is absolutely plastered with underseal'. I was happy to be outbid on that, but what a evasive and possibly not entirely wholesome vendor.
I'll bid unseen if I think the advert is representative and the seller seems honest and reliable. Mr Bumble and the grey 156GTA seller in W-s-M could have been ultra honest in their descriptions or talking their cars down.
