Fitting a 3.0 24v engine to a 3.0 12v Spider

Also posted in Engines forum....

My Son has a 1996 LHD 3.0 12v (Euro 1) Spider, that has serious knocking, local indie thinks its big ends, but we haven't taken apart yet to investigate. To get the car going quickly we are thinking of replacing the engine, so we can rebuild/ refurbish his engine without rushing

1) I have a 24v engine from a 2001 Spider, with a cracked cylinder head - can we use the bottom end from that engine and swap on the 12v heads?

2) Buy a complete 24v engine from a 1998 166 (not sure if its euro 1 or 2) - will this fit straight in and work with the original ECU etc?

For both options:

Will either 24v engine fit the 12v 5 speed gearbox?
Are there any components/fittings on the 24v engines that are incompatible with the 12v Spider?
What ancillary parts do we need to also fit from the donor/ refit from the 12v engine?

Thanks in advance

PS does Euro 1,2,3 equate to CF1,2,3?

Fairly certain the answer to both 1 and 2 is "no" I'm afraid. Not certain but I think the belt drive set up is quite different between 12v and 24v. The 24v engine from a 166 will have two issues, I think.....the mounts etc are different on a 166 as the front subframes are markedly different - and I doubt that the 12v ECU would run the 24v properly - though it "might" be possible to get it to run.

Engine would fit the gearbox.

Euro does equate to CF, yes....
