Re-starting this old post about running temperature.I've had my 2.0TS from new (98).
It's always run at around 85 degrees in town. Only in really bad traffic did it go over 90 and the fan come on. On motorways it ran at around 75.
I'm mainly doing 200 mile motorway journeys now at a steady 90 -95 mph and the temperature gauge sits at around 75 as it always has for 12 years. But in town , even without bad traffic, after 5 to 10 minutes it goes over 90 degrees and the fan is constantly kicking in and out.
My conclusion was to change the thermostat. I did it with OEM part. While changing it, I flushed the whole system through - very clean, just really small amount of muck around the heater part but looked great for 12 years.
But, it hasn't corrected the fault. Any ideas?
The car still sounds a tight and responsive as ever (82k mileage only). I was thinking of changing the lead (sensor/sender- not sure?) from the thermostat.
Oil needs a change but nowhere near dramatically enough to cause this. No oil loss, not a bad colour, gaskets all ok, fuel consumption same as ever (35mpg+ at constant 90mph and 27mpg around town).
I'll change oil, plugs, air filter and maybe even leads at the weekend but I can't believe there is any link unless someone tells me otherwise.
Another point on oil. I've read so many rave about how good Mobil 1 is with the GTV and I want to try it. they seem to have 4 or 5 versions now. Are you talking about "Mobil 1 New Life 0w40" or "Mobil 1 Extended Life 10w60"?
