Hmmm Hiss.....Bang....

Weird things have been happening on the Spider over the last two day...

Driving around the countryside me and the missus noticed that everytime I accelerated they is a huge hissing sound coming from the car like a chavved-up turbo, then after a really hard acceleration off of junction as I change from second to third there was a HUGE backfire from the rear end and cloud of smoke, not to mention a slightly bewildered cyclist (but he didn't come from the car).

Since the backfire, the hissing sound has disappeared.

Then yesterday exactley the same thing, hissing, Bang, normal...

My only guess is it could be the baffles in the back-box are disintergrating and being fired out at passing cyclists (kinda cool, almost Bond-like ) as the hissing seems to be coming from the back of the car.

Any suggestion?????

Thanks to all the waves around Glos, especailly the grey P3 GTV in Tetbury.

Could be something to do with the ignition system...

Re: Hiss.....Bang....

Hissing...sounds like the induction side. Check your pipes in the engine bay.

But if it IS from the back of the car....

EDIT: where's the fuel pump on a Spider?

Re: Hiss.....Bang....

I would go for the induction also, check there's no leak after the MAF. Mine used to roar a bit until I found a split just in front of the throttle body. Never had any backfiring though

Re: Hiss.....Bang....

if there's a leak on the induction side, it could possibly be that the air/fuel ratios are all to pot, the "backfire" could be unburnt fuel gathering in the exhaust until it goes BOOM. my old g reg 75 did this until one day the explosion was so large it blew a hole in the box !

turned out that 2 of the 4 rubber seals at the inlet manifold had cracked & it was drawing air, the ecu was just flinging fuel at the engine to try to balance it out.
