key code

Hi guys, i'm sure this has been covered before, i've tried the search function to no avail.

I have a 2.0 TS on an R reg 97/98, when i bought the car it fired up fine. I have since had the battery out of the car a while, now when i try to start it the keycode light is on and wont fire. i can get around it by entering the emergency code, however i have to do this every time i start the car up
Is there anyway i can reset the system using the existing keys and code. i do have a master key which i think may be wrong as it wont turn in the ignition and the other keys seem to be after market ones as there is no alfa badge on them.

Any help is much appreciated

If you can start with the emergency code, then your ECU is OK, but something is wrong in the immobilizer system. Check that you have power to the yellow immobilizer box (fuses etc).

One trick I learned from some other Alfisti was to disconnect the battery, wait like five minutes, turn the ignition on and then connect the battery again with the ignition on. He claimed he had solved quite a few immo problems like yours by doing this.

Taking it one step further there's a lot that can be done like resetting (virginizing) the ECU and immo box and program all keys again. You can even totally disable the immobilizer, but all of that requires some skills in electronics.

There is a well documented issue with the immobiliser antenna not reading the key, usually due to a loose connection in the steering column. This means the 'code' light doesnt go out and the fuel pump is isolated.

The aerial wire could well be part of the issue - try unplugging and reconnecting the connections into the immobiliser box (which is located above the fusebox). Can also be the connections to the relays - if your car is the 156 mentioned in your post header, they are mounted in front of the battery and they can be disturbed when removing/replacing the battery. Check the relays and the wiring into the relay mounting blocks - quite common for the wiring into these to corrode.....

Right then guys, thought i should update this thread

Thanks to those who have tried to help me with the code issues. I was told by an Alfa specialist that i would need to put the car on a computer. and most likely will need to be taken to a dealer or someone with the euipment to reset the key code.

They said it would cost around 100, however i managed to reset it by leaving the key in the ignition and reconnecting the battery.

hope this helps others in the same situation.
