Tyres (advice please)

We are running a 916 Spider to Rome on a 400+ mile epic road trip, seeking advice on Tyre's...

Who is running what on 16 inch rims ?

205 215 which is best... do 225's work

50 or 55 side wall ? any thoughts ?

Thanks in advance oh and if anyone has a set up for grabs in central Scotland it may make my decision easier looking to go with a branded option rather than budget due to duration of trip etc

I run 205/50 Goodyear Efficient Grip. Not the cheapest but wear rate is very good as is wet weather performance. Ride quality is also very good, low noise etc.

The correct size is 205/50 R16

I would stick with it personally.

Took our Spider to Milan on Falken 205/50's. Nice smooth ride, good grip in both wet and dry, even wear, (i know this is dependent on set up and suspension condition). Overall, a really good set of tyres and not too pricey either.

Rule of thumb is for every increase in rim size or tyre width you should go down a size in aspect ratio,

So 205/50 16, would become 215/45 17, then 225/40 18etc

However if you increase the width of the tyre you may need to fit wheel spacers.

As symon has pointed out you're probably as well sticking to the original spec, as the smaller the aspect ratio (sidewall) becomes, the harsher the rise becomes.

Hope this helps, enjoy the journey

I am running 205/55-16 Hankook Ecos on standard rims. After enduring some 17" Azev's with low profile Falkens and crashing over every bump and pothole. Now the ride is good and returning 37 mpg.

Recently replaced some Vredstein Ultracs with some Dunlop Sportmaxx RT 205/60s.

About as high performance as you can get in that size and car seems very sure footed. Best tyres on noise and wet weather performance apparently which would be great if I drove the car in the wet with the roof up neither of which I make a habit of!
