To add further, I noticed a pretty significant change simply from stripping down my calipers, cleaning the grit off them with a wire brush (you would be amazed how much came off) and then lubricating everything back up again. The piston moved much more freely and the overall braking capacity did improve from a simple clean-up and some new fluid.
Mind you, I still want to get my hands on some aftermarket pads/discs at some point to further improve them. But I certainly wouldn't say the GTV braking is poor once you give everything a good clean and lubricate the moving parts it is certainly passable. Not the greatest, not the worst either.
