Are you sure it's supposed to be a 10 Amp? Check the manual.. though it sounds about right.
I'd look at the wiring to the fuel pump relay. The wires to the spade connectors that are pressed into the plastic blocks (underside of where the relays plug in) are likely to be brittle by now and could be making a poor contact and, if broken could be potentially shorting out.
Also have a look at the other end.. where the wires to the fuel pump actually connect to the fuel pump.
It may be worth swapping the relays round (I think lambda relay might be the same as the fuel pump.. but have a look) in case it's a sticky relay causing the problem.
