Ok, I'm new to GTV ownership and I want to know about what I should expect as normal behaviour for my 3.0 V6.
First off, my coolant is leaking (obviously not normal, i know), but I am trying to figure out where its going.
I keep finding myself staring at my temperature gauge, in stopped traffic the needle ventures over to the wrong side of 90, just a wee bit. The electric fan will kick in and it will try and cool itself, it never gets alarmingly high. Once up to a few mph, the temp gauge returns to just below 90. On the motorway, at speed, with the air con on, the engine runs nice and cool, way below 90.
I'm worried it may be a head gasket failure, the car has 103k miles on the clock. Head gasket was replaced in 06 at 66k. However, there is no loss of power and no mayo in under the oil filler cap, the car does not feel down on power and the engine runs very smooth.
In terms of smoke from the exhaust, here is a clip:
I wouldn't call that smoke.
this was taken at normal operating temperature, just below 90. After starting from cold and not moving.
The coolant is disappearing at an alarming rate though, on drive from London to Oxford and back, i lost about 3 litres of coolant. I have taken to keeping a 2l bottle of tap water in the boot in case i need to top up when i'm out and about. There are no puddles under the car either. I did notice a little steam coming from under the cooler header tank cap, but could this much coolant escape through there? The level does rise as the engine gets warm, but I believe that should be expected.
Any ideas? (sorry for the long post)
