Good Evening All,
A few niggles popping up with my Spider.
Firstly, on left hand bends, with the throttle applied and the front wheels under load I get a whirring sort of wap wap wap noise that I am pretty sure is coming from or near the front off side wheel area.
At the MoT I mentioned it and they said there was no bearing noise or anything like that so would suggest it was the wheel, tyre or both. I had the tyres looked at - they were (and the rears still are) cheap Rotalas and two tyre places showed me they were not evenly shaped. They suggested the rims were OK. As a check, I swapped the front wheels (17 inch teles) with 16 inch wheels from the GTV I have broken and thought I could no longer hear anything so was quite happy that it was indeed tyre fault - I had those wheels on for nearly a week and went up to Bristol and back too. £207 later on nice new Dunlop Sportmaxx RTs and what's that?? Yes - still have this whirring noise!!
No bad thing having new tyres that are both quieter, efficient and more grippy than the old ones but I still need to sort this problem! Apart from a teledial being slightly out of shape (which both places said they weren't) what could this be? The Inner CV joint boot cover was replaced for the MoT. Could it be the driveshaft itself?? I guess I need to find a local wheel specialist to be sure on that front too...
Secondly, since bringing the car out of its winter slumber, the gear change has been quite stiff and very notchy / difficult to get in to gear - particularly first gear when cold. Changing down from third to second is awkward too... I had the gearbox oil change in 2012 when I had the end casing cleaned out... Is there anywhere else I can lubricate before trying to change the oil again? What about the clutch fluid - is it a shared system with the brake fluid? If so, the level is on Max but I guess if the fluid is old, it could be contributing??
As always guys and gals - any help muchly appreciated. Am going on a mini driving holiday In Wales soon and would like the car in good health for it!
