A question about AR gear change

I'm not the mechanical type and don't have an extensive motoring history but I am now on my 4th Alfa, and driven a fair amount of cars in my 34 years. I've been wondering about something for a few days and decided to post about it while I pretend to do some work.

The gear changes on my 2 x 156s and 2 x GTVs has been extremely smooth and comfortable and I've never had a similar experience in many of the Vauxhalls/VAG cars etc which have a very clunky/not as smooth a gear change - I'm actually referring to strictly manual cars with the conventional clutches. What I would like to know is why is my experience so incomparable to the Alfas I've had? A beer for anyone who can explain/dispel this notion.
