Spider Key codes and immobalisers

I have a 1998 spider and a problem! Can anyone help?

The car came with three keys, the master brown key and two regular ones. The master key appears to work fine although the advice is not to use it regularly as it's bad news if it gets lost or damaged. One of the regular keys starts the car but wont open the doors or glove box etc.. The third key works all locks and starts the car however the car does not always recognise the code in the key and it can take several attempts to start the car.

does anyone know if there is a way I can recode the keys myself using the master key or if this is an expensive job at a garage?

Re: Spider Key codes and immobalisers

The small red Key isnt supposed to open the doors/glovebox/boot etc - its a valet key.

The brown key (as you state) is the master key. Officially theres no problem using at as often as you like (the max. 50 uses is a rumour) but you will be buggered if you lose it.

You might find that its an aerial problem, rather than a transmitter problem which is causing the car not to recognise the key.

The immobiliser uses an RF receiver mounted on the steering column to read the key code. This aerial can sometimes play up. You can sometimes solve the problem by relocating the aerial to another place on the steering column, which isnt a mammoth task to complete.

Yes, I'd agree with Euroboy, brown master (does everything), red valet key (only starts engine, will not open doors, boot or glove box) and red spare starts engine and opens all locks. It must be coded okay even if it only sometimes starts the engine so I would suspect the aerial or you have a huge bunch of keys which is blocking the signal.
