Help needed

Hi all

I have just purchased a 98 20 TS GTV for my wife (she wouldn't let me have it ) I am having a bit of trouble and have read through the forum and think the variator has had it. The problem is that in 1st and 2nd gear the car will not go over 3500rpm and Kangaroos violently. It also seems very underpowered in the other gears. The car has done a warrented 43000 miles and has a good service history but not main dealer. I also only have the red key with the chip so is it possible to get another key and the front off the original stereo is so worn it will not work.

Thanks in advance

Re: Help needed

The variator makes a diesel-like rattle at start-up, otherwise it doesn't cause any *severe* symptoms.

Your MAF sensor is probably shot to give the symptoms you describe.

I'm not sure if your GTV is a phase 1 or 2 (Ph2 had the chrome grille and the silver console). On the Ph2. the master key is more maroon than red. If your key is glossy red it's not the master key. Of the glossy keys, the regular keys are snail-shell shaped, whereas there is a "flat" (horse-shoe shaped) key that is actually a valet key - it doesn't unlock the boot or glovebox.

I'm less sure about Ph1. keys but generally they were similar, though they came (I think) with a separate alarm fob, rather than a built-in plipper button in the key.

I have a spare Alfa - Clarion Stereo (with Code and manual) And CD changer for that matter, if you fancy making me an offer, I've replaced mine for a mp3 player.

Re: Help needed

Thanks for the replys. I think I have found the problem with the Kangarooing and poor performance. The hose between the MAF sensor and Throttle body is almost split right the way around is this common and does anyone know how much they are.

Re: Help needed

Don't know how much for the hose. Give Jamie at the Alfa Workshop a ring on 01763 245481 and I am sure he can help

Alternatively another good Afla spares specialist I've used is

With regard to keys, I would search the forum as this has been covered a number of times... Options appear to range from a remortgage to be able to afford Alfa dealer price to do it, replacing with an after market system to paying some one to clone the code.
