Yesterday saw an epic day of work undertaken by Alex (Smaky) in the cramped circumstances of a single garage with howling gales and driving rain...
Firstly the Oasi spider was fired up to ascertain exactly what was wrong with the original engine. I bought it as a bottom end failure but when we went to pick the car up on a trailer, my interest was piqued by Alex stating that it didn't sound like a bottom end gone and might be something less sinister.
It turns out that the banging/slapping noise was actually being caused by a slipped tensioner, which mercifully had not allowed the belt to slip.
The service history of this engine was a bit of an unknown quantity, so it was decided to continue with the engine swap as planned. The donor engine at least has had a full belt/variator/water pump change etc, so made sense to use it as planned. So I now have a complete spare cf2 2.0 TS engine/gearbox available if anyone is interested - 63k on the clock, which will need a cam belt change but appears otherwise fine.
So, I feel for the original owner of the car in some ways as this was mis diagnosed, leading to them giving up on a relatively sound car.
Other parts from the donor spider came in very handy, the exhaust system is now as new, the missing fusebox has been replaced and late yesterday evening, the electric roof was closed properly for the first time in a couple of months.
Key in ignition, and after a couple of cranks, she fired up straight away.
I have to say how impressed I was at the job done in a day, which left me pretty shattered just watching and passing spanners/parts - engine out and engine back in, everything returned to how it should be, old bodged jobs done by other hands resorted & rectified. One man, one day....
Now I just have the interior to refit and clean, together with the last parts to remove from the donor car, to keep and to distribute to those that are contacting me.
I will take some more pictures another time, forgot the camera yesterday.
