definately sounds like the MAF to me, £150-200 sounds too dear to me, should be more like £100.
As mentioned before, I would disconnect the MAF, which is on the air inlet pipe after the airbox, and see if it drives the same. If it does, then the MAF is not working correctly.
Another thought occurs though, Does it always stick at 4000 revs? could be a problem with the throttle, I know my spider runs on a cable throttle (not sure if the newer ones are the same) and if the cable was slack or the butterfly sticking, could that cause this fault? worth looking into. (can you rev to over 4000 when in neutral?)
