I have this exact same issue on my twinny and have had it for about 3 months now. Seems that the error comes on after the car warmed up somewhat (ie, on the return journey home from the shops). I haven't really noticed any serious adverse effects from it but do plan on getting it assessed sometime in the near future.
I have heard three possible causes; ABS sensor, ABS ECU, and ABS pump. Has your indie categorically ruled out one (or more) of the sensors being the cause? This would probably be the best case scenario as they are relatively cheap and easy to install (albeit a bit fidgety from what I have read).
I can't imagine it being the pump if the error clears occasionally (like mine does) as it just wouldn't seem to make sense unless it was still on its way out. As I have had the exact same sort of thing you are describing here for the past 3 months I find it highly unlikely that its the pump as surely by now it would have fully shat itself and the error would be constant.
So my thinking is its either a sensor(s) or the ABS ECU at fault (faulty ECU sending mixed signals?). If I were you I would try and get a second opinion as this issue seems to be a rather difficult one to resolve, as seen by no one on the forums having a definitive answer to this question.
But personally I doubt the pump simply because I have had the exact same error coming up for about 3 months now and in the mornings/first drive of the day it is clear and then pops up upon a second/return journey and then remains on for the remainder of the day. I suppose this is because over night the car is off for long enough for the error code to clear itself and then pops up after a short run to the shops or work etc.
