Hi to all have looked thru various threads but haven't really found what symptoms my twin spark has at the moment.
On a recently rebuilt engine which included mains big ends etc etc I didn't change the Variator as at the time it was ok at the point of rebuilding.
The engine has a slight rattle at start but goes after 4-5 secs the bit that concerns me is when the car is gently revved up no problems but when the engine is coming back to idle there is a top end rattle / tapping that isn't nice at all.
Is this a symptom of a well and truly dead Variator or something else I haven't thought of up to this point.
I'm not ruling out my engine building capabilities either.
Any ideas please not going to drive it anywhere until I have investigated a bit more.
Hmm. Could be something to do with the balance shaft but i'd say variator is most likely
Thirsty could be just simply the cold weather, my Spider is exactly the same at the moment. I assume your temperature gauge is still reading normal? If your engine is struggling to warm up and stays cool on high speed driving then you need a new thermostat too
I had a rebuilt engine fitted late last year, and it was really tappety to start with, sounds much like yours, tapping at idle, stops if you blip the throttle then comes back as the revs dropped.
I`ve done 1000-1500 miles after the running in oil was changed, and it still does it sometimes.
Lawrence was pretty certain it was just a lazy tappet, and would go away after 1000-1500 miles.
Shouldnt be the variator on mine, as it should be new!
I had the same problem and someone suggested Lucas Heavy Oil so i tried a litre and it cured the problem it puts life back into the seals in the variator APPARENTLY, but it worked been quite ever since 12 months now.
