Don't disagree with any of that, but my point is that if they are going to build a car which is about cruising and being beautiful (& nothing wrong with that), why not make it a four seater like the others in that market sector and maximise the sales potential. The platform already exists and the styling would still work well.
Niche products are all well and good, especially when they play to traditional strengths (does this, really?) but in this market segmented world where Joe Public categorises cars by which BMW they are equivalent to, I think the "sports car" comparisons are both inevitable and unflattering.
The Spider seems to me to fall between two stools; too heavy and slow for the sports car set, too restricted for the Yummy Mummies, and will suffer as a result.
