That's bad news... but interesting. Are you sure the "accident" wasn't staged just so they could steal your back box?
A reasonable back-box (Supersprint etc.) will touch you about £200 but obviously the sky's the limit if you want to go for a custom made type (you choose the style of the pipes etc.).
Suspension: It's the springs that affect the ride hide, not the dampers. Conversely, it's the dampers that have more effect on the feel of the car, not the springs.
So concentrate of finding good dampers and then look for regular length springs afterwards (or as a secondary consideration). There's not much wrong with the OE springs. You can consider buying new ones if yours are just saggy or rusted and using them with your new dampers.
Bilstein seem to be pretty good at the moment.
