How's the fluid level Dave, are you losing fluid? Is the pedal going down on it's own, or do you mean there is no resistance on the initial press?
The ticking is probably from your flexi joints which are just below the bulkhead, new front section(s) required, don't bother getting someone to weld it.
Was going to say change the thermostat but you already got that sorted.
Clunk & wondering, mmm sounds very similar to someone elses problem; it turned out to be the actual hubs were worn where the lower arm ball joints attach. I think they replaced the hub in the end. But check your track rod end first.
