OK.. having read many an entry on assorted forums I'm fast coming to the conclusion that replacing the 'squibs-unit' (the actual clasp unit part of the seat belt beside centre console) is the only option if wires have all been soldered as per 'universal' advice... BUT here's a new thing.. someone out there offered a word of caution..given that the units are predisposed to explode if handled incorrectly!
Does anyone have anything to add to this alarming footnote? Or is it an urban myth?
Posting explosives likely to be frowned upon by Royal Mail's H&S dept.. for sure....
A pretentioner exploded on my 145 last summer when I took the seatbelt out for cleaning. I was temporarily deafened and nearly lost 3 fingers in the process. While this is a mechanical device I'm not sure how the GTV compares. But the answer to your question is "no" it's not an urban myth.
ONLY qualified engineers are allowed to work on the squibs (explosive charge), on no account should you be working on these items, the only thing you as the hobby mechanic should do is replace the whole buckle assembly after a period of 10 minutes (reference chapter 55A in the GTV workshop manual) from disconnecting the battery.
I changed the whole assembly including the buckle. Fixed by 1x17mm bolt to the seat frame. I didnt actually remove the charge from the buckle or anything mental like that.
Great Information thanks.I have also the air bag light on an needed to give the seats a dam good clean/condition(came up nice BTW)So I removed the battery removed seats an found that the passenger seat did not have plug attached so not sure if to plug it in when I put seats back?
