Went to look at a 98 gtv today. It was metallic grey with 72000 on the clock with a yrs mot and service history up to 63k. Outside there were a few scrapes and scratches. Engine started well from cold with no chattering or diesel engine sounds. Inside was leather and was in good nick. Took it for a drive and noticed the engine management light was on. Car was pretty unresponsive for a while till it heated up. Was putting the throttle down and the power wasnt there.
As it warmed up things got better. The guy was asking 900 quid for it but managed to get him down to 800. I told him I would let him know.
My thinking was cambelts need done and a diagnosis on the management light needs done. Taking the price well over my grand budget.
Was I right to walk away?
Edit: yes I was right to walk away. The dealer has started name calling after I told him of the reasons I dont want to buy.
Apparenly I am now a time waster. Oh well I think I must of taken at least 15mins of his time to look at the car and let him know an hour later I wasn't interested.
