Can they be pulled? You'd be amazed what a good dent man an do. Problem is finding one. I had a 'massive fail' about a month ago whilst cleaning one I my cars. I lost grip on the shingle on the drive and my knee put a pie shaped (and sized) dent low down on the car. I actually heard the metal go as I did it. I spoke to a friendly garage who recommended this guy and two days later, and sixty quid lighter, you couldn't see where he'd been. I was convinced I was in for a decent claim including panel work and paint . Speak to a couple of decent classic resto garages in your area, you may be surprised.
From an insurance perspective, you are right, if you make the claim visible to them they will more than likely write the car off so may be best to get a couple of quotes and chew over them. Remember you still have to pay the excess which will be upto a few hundred quid so the cost to your policy (if your quote is ok) would be a couple of hundred quid. I'd rather pay that and undertake the work myself rather than let your insurers use their local recommended generic body shop or worse take the car away...
