How about a rocker switch in the bottom of the console bin under the armrest, or, if you have one like my Spider has, the square bin behind the armrest where I put my iPhone. It has a rubber mat which could be removed and later used to conceal the hole if the switch is ever removed.
Good idea to have the switch, much better not to have the aerial up unnecessarily with risk of damage.
Otherwise, good idea also for a head unit change. In my experience, several JVC and Sony models (and probably many others) put the aerial up only when needed (as pkr said, make sure TA is off).
On the other hand, Pioneer models in particular seem to put the aerial up all the time. That was with cheap-ish models, though. I suspect that like the auto-dim with headlights on, large buttons you can read at night, and a matrix display that can actually be read in sunlight, the aerial-only-when-needed is a feature reserved for the more expensive models. I like all these features and would happily pay $400/£200 for a good head unit. It's a pity that Blaupunkt were left out of the feature-competitive marketplace, as they had mastered that OEM 'look and feel' 10-20 years ago and had all the things I've mentioned. The later, cheaper Blaupunkts were only average.
