What's that noise?

Hi all,

Since last weekend, I have noticed a noise that is only audible at idle. It sounds like a stone being rattled inside a tin can. Does this sound like a pulley bearing wearing out? Or could it be a belt making that noise?

I guess it could be a metal heat shield working loose and touching something. It goes when I blip the throttle. Hoping it isn't something serious, like the cat breaking up!

Don`t want to be bearer of bad news but it could be the cat actually..i had one go on Fiat Punto Sporting and it rattled on certain rpm range very close to idle rpm. When pulling away on traffic lights I could hear it every time. Give it a little bit of throttle and no more noise

Could be the variator, (sounds like a diesel engine.) Have you had the cam belt changed since you owned the car? has the variator ever been changed?, usually when the belts are changed the garage would advise you, as that's the best time to change it.

Thanks both for the replies. I think that you both could potentially be right. I had the variator changed two cam belt changes back, in 2007. It has done about 22000 miles since then, however, the sound does appear to be coming from the bottom of the car, which makes me think that it almost certainly is the cat starting to disintegrate. Hmmm, better start saving. Those puppies are made of platinum, so won't be cheap!

Mine does the same noise too and i found out that it's what you described above..
A plastic plate where the radiator cables go through!
On mine snapped and was touching the fan's mounting..
BUT though i replaced it from a spare ph1 spider i have, the noise still remains..less but it's there.
I do believe that's what causing it though, so i' ll take another look..
