Re: Air filter modification
Oil based cotton filter right? K&N maybe? Yeah they're crap and are well known to screw up the AFM and throttle body. The oil does not stay in the cotton and gets sucked into the engine, not only that but the oil also works like a magnet for the dust actually atracting more dust to the filter. Once your filter gets clogged you can start saying goodbye to your performance and possibly damage the catalytic converter. There's also the fact that tiny particles of dust and oil get into the engine and act as an abrasive paste doing untold damage to your heads. Cotton filters were developed for racing where an engine gets a rebuild after a few kms use and the filters generally get thrown out and replaced (no cleaning or re-oiling). If you want your engine to last, don't use them!
I replaced my filter with a Raid HP as it uses several layers of differently graded foam and a special polymer to catch the dust. Washable with soap and water too. Much better than standard and safer than oil based cotton.
