is the gtv 16v engine a strong unit ? and how many miles should it be good for ?

Hmmm......It's as good as its maintenance, generally. All the 16v Alfas - 145, 146, 155, and in modified form 147, 156, 166 - are prone to catastrophic failure if the oil levels are not regularly maintained, and the timing belt and tensioner MUST be changed well in advance of the specified 72K miles - most people reckon 36K is plenty long enough. Probably best to change the variator and water pump at same time.....

Sorry to sound warning noises, but best to be honest! The thing is, the cars just go so well that you have to give them their head and use the revs, grinning the while

So - a strong engine? Yes but fragile-ish......
