Broken balance belt. Why would it break?
Thankfully no cambelt damage to report but the balance belt was rubbing against the timing belt....
Working on the project GTV this weekend and i had suspected the balance belt had been broken for a while as i saw the belt hanging off the pully last time i was under the car. I removed the upper timing belt cover to have a look. Under the cover the belt had snapped and was bent over double and wedged between the crank pully and the lower cover. Part of the balance belt was touching the timing belt but there was no rubbing damage to the timing belt itselt. There was a LOT of rubber powder over the covers from the balance belt though and it was badly worn in several areas.
The timing belt and balance belt was replaced in May 2011 by the previous owner (only 6000 miles ago). The tensioners had been replaced too. The belt was a contitec supplied by buypartsby.
The balance shafts rotated freely with no noise or roughness. The tensioners seem smooth aswell. What could have caused the balance belt to snap??
For the moment I am running without a balancebelt at all. You can feel a slight difference in smoothness at higher revs but nothing worth rushing to replacing the belt.
