Some brands like VW have software that corrects the temparature gauge which makes it show a solid 90 degrees, also when actual temperature is slightly higher or lower. It will only deviate from that when certain values are exceeded, and when it does it means something is truly wrong. The 916 shows the actual (uncorrected) temperature and therefore it varies, which is logical when you think about it as the actual temperature of the cooling liquid will vary under different circumstances. I always felt they should have given the gauge a 'green' area somewhere between 70 and 100, so you don't get worried over nothing...
