Initially two wires (orange and black) going to somekid of heatsink under the blower motor in the passenger footwell had a dodgy connector which i sorted out.
This kind of worries me! How did you sort it out?
There are three areas to look at.
The fan itself.
The fan is permanently live fed by a fuse in the engine bay. The fan has a red wire and an orange wire. Short the Orange wire to a good earth and if it is working, the fan will start up. If not, you need to check for 12v on the red wire.
The speed controller.
This is the thing you were looking at with the Orange and Black wires. It also has another 3 thin wires ( Orange, Light Blue and Yellow ). The thick Orange wire comes from the fan and the black wire earths it depending on the electronics inside.
What did you do to to these two wires?
This is where I think your problem lies and you'd be best off getting a replacement or at least checking the connection is good. It is an electronic device so polarity is important.
Some 156s used the same speed controller so they are fairly easy to source. Check the part number on yours ( should be 60779301 ) with the one you'll probably be buying to be certain you have the right one. You CANNOT use a speed controller from a phase 1 GTV/Spider - there is absolutely no compatibility between them so don't even think about trying it.
The climate ECU
Least likely, the climate control ECU which controls the speed controller has a problem. But you can probably discount it at this stage.
