rattling cat

Looking for a bit of advice please:
Yesterday I noticed a mettalic kind of rasping noise if I revved sharply, down between 1000-2000rpm.
Took it into the garage and they put it up on ramps and advised the cat needed replaced on the centre section. When the mechanic hit the box on that pipe it rattled inside. Price to replace was 400. Since leaving the garage the rattle has completely vanished. I don't know if this is a good thing or not? Can catyltic convertors develop rattles intermittently?

The element brakes up and the rattle is the sound of the element vibrating. The element could have moved to a more secure position. In this case the rattle might return or not. Don't be surprised if it fails an mot on emissions.

I have only ever had one failed cat and it had the most awfull buzz/rattle at all revs, you would really notice it.

You can get one for 150ish from a motor factors. Fitting it wouldn't be too hard to DIY.

I cut my heatshield off too cause it was rattling. I'd say if it turns out you do need a new cat, be aware those cheap ones do not contain anything like the amount of rare metals in them that a proper one does. I get less than 10% for a pattern cat than I do for a genuine one in scrap. Those pattern ones do the bare minimum and on a 10+ year old engine they may not do enough to get an emissions test pass, or perhaps they do for a year or two but I wouldn't expect much more.
