I've now had 2 years happy motoring with my GTV, checking the oil regularly, did the rear heated window fix from here (thanks!) and everything's been grand.
Last couple of days an interesting new problem appeared and though I've been looking around the forums for an answer I haven't really found one.
Symptoms in chronological order
Maybe these aren't all related, but I've had very few problems for them to all come along at once.
1. There has been heavy rain all week.
2. Saturday morning when I turned the key all the dash lights flickered continously rather than come on solidly. The alarm then went off. I took teh key out and reset t he alarm using the fob. When I put the key back in the dashboard lights were still flickering, but eventually went solid and I started the car ok. There was a bit of a ticking noise, but I figured something was just cold, it wasn't loud. I checked the oil (fine) and figured I'd see if it got better as it warmed up.
3. Saturday afternoon I started the car first time fine, no problems. Assumed I'd had an alfa glitch and drove 40 miles, no problems. But the knocking wasn't changing as the engine warmed up.
4. Saturday evening coming home the ticking was still there and at dual carrigeway speeds there was a periodic vibration both heard and felt through the steering wheel. Not excessive but wasn't there previously. I drove home at 50 where this vibration didn't seem to happen.
Additionally I tried:
Being at 70 and going into neutral (vibration stopped).
Revving at traffic lights in neutral (vibration present).
So it seemed to be engine related.
As I used to work on alternators/starter motors, my first thought was a belt wearing, but I havent' heard any whining, so I figured maybe a bearing.
Cycled to work today and then this afternoon had trouble starting the car, when I did get it started I went round the engine trying to figure out where the knocking noise was coming from, I don't think it's the belt and the covers and exhaust manifold seems tight.
I have seen a few threads on here about loose spark plugs, does anyone think it could be something like that? Are the electrical and knocking problems linked or just coincidental?
Many thanks for any theories/ideas, this forum has always been great for advice and I don't really want to drive a long way to a specialist in case I break something.
