Rear suspension, get underneath and look at all the bushes, and particularly the spring (trailing arm) pans at the rear. Definitely check the clutch is light and above all else without a receipt to show the timing belt has been changed factor in £500 to the deal to get that done.

After that the obvious 'older' car stuff, muck on the oil cap inner, sticky or heavy clutch, pulling left or right on braking, knocking noises from suspension etc. I am sure there is more advice to come but truthfully your decision to get a GTV is sound they are brilliant. Make sure you know the difference between phase 1 and 2 - it's the black interior vs the metal effect and differences around the body work so you get the look you want, you can't upgrade much of the interior on Phase 1 to level 2.

A bundle of receipts etc.. can also be helpful. I bought mine blind (silly boy) but luckily the receipts revealed a full new rear suspension set-up, new-ish clutch, radiator etc..

Saying that I have still had a few jobs (cambelt, oil and air filter changes, door mirror, seat recover, replace bent wheel etc..) but I guess these are standard maintenance issues on an oldish car.

Expectations will depend on how much you are looking to spend I think.

This may sound very trivial, but check the fuel release flap opens when you push the button. I've had to change this on all three 916's I've owned.

On a 10 year old car everything will be getting on somewhat so basically anything and everything. A huge wedge of receipts is not guarantee of a quality motor.

All of the above, PLUS:- One that hasn't had loads of owners .... the certain "tells" I also look for to see if a car has been loved or not is ....

a) Condition of the boot - original tool kit present?
b) Condition of the carpets / interior - is it fair wear and tear?
c) Does it wreak of ciggies and / or wet dog?
d) Are the tyres all matching (either in pairs or all four)
e) Are they quality - Dunlop, Vredestein, Goodyear etc. or Chong Wong Lee's?

If the car looks good on face value, but if you see major issues in these areas then I wouldn't be interested in it.

Top Tip >
Service Receipts - call the garage to see if it's genuine and was there any work not done, that should have been. Moody Invoices have been known!

Have a look on Alfa Workshop's website for buyers guide - plenty of good info and prices here.

Good Luck!

PS. Don't forget the V6

Check the oil, to see if it's black or clean. Not everyone changes the oil regularly enough, which can speed up engine wear.
