Mate you have been proper skanked there I really feel for you. The standards in the general garage trade (and even specialist trade) is shocking. I've sacked 2 specialists, not to mention numerous generic garages. (Where I go now is great though, I'm lucky. But its a 90 minute drive...)
It seems a garage charges for its own incompetence; they misdiagnose with total impunity then have the temerity to charge for incorrect work.
But its really worrying how hard it seems to be for garages to diagnose things, even in these days of ECU's supposedly recording everything. My wife used to have a Renault Megane which had a (very) intermittent fault, misfiring suddenly then clearing itself while driving. A Renault specialist of 20 years standing had it for 10 days, couldnt replicate the fault and the ECU had recording NOTHING. He checked everything wiring wise, and gave us it back (at least they didnt charge). The guy that bought it later in life, I heard through the grapevine the fault got a lot more frequent, he went to a main dealer (mistake) they said they 'thought' it was the ECU and charged him £300 without fixing anything! (In my experience ECU's dont go wrong... usually someone saying this means they are scoobied about the problem). Dont know what happened after that to it.
I digress a little anyway. I can highly recommend Peak Alfa, which is where I go all the way from Leeds for. Quick google search, speak to Roger there, its certainly travellable to from Staffs. I find it well worth the journey - you will be dealing with Roger and Roger alone, he is a total one man band (a good thing) tons of GTV experience and recently crowned winner of Alfa Championship (overall winner). Tell him John recommended him, if you go in the next week or so you will see my beast there having its new 3.2 engine fettled
