I remember driving my cousin's exquisitely maintained 993 a few years ago when my wheels were a 2.5 V6 156 (Veloce) and being singularly unimpressed by the performance of the 993. I was expecting kick-in-the-back acceleration grunt and yes it was pretty quick but frankly my Alfa V6 on song (i.e. 4000 RPM plus) was a pretty good match for it, and cost probably a tenth of the woofer! I would take on a road-going (i.e. not race-prepped) Porsche 911 or variant any day on the track because their back ends are so fond of turning into front ends and you need real skill to drive them fast, which IMHO is not something a lot of people have!!!! In fact, I had great joy sticking like glue to the back of old 911's through the twisties at Zandvoort in a ridiculously over-tuned classic Mini back in the early 90's, although they of course always left me for dead on the straights and had far better brakes. And didn't leak oil. Or have puddles in the footwells. Or radiators that overboiled.
