What's this? String/spring in hood

Hi All,

Having a look at my Spider hood the other night and noticed that there is a piece of string attached to a spring on the leading edge of the b-pillar section of the hood.

It attaches to the spring and then runs down the leading edge, 90 degrees around a small metal piece then runs back along the bottom edge of the hood.

I can see whe it goes and have no idea what it is for. One side is snapped and the other is badly freyed as it passes rounf the 90 degree turn.

Don't have a photo at the moment.
Any ideas? Is it important?

Not sure if it helps but in my GTV there is a bit of string in the boot that is the manual petrol flap release.

It's to help keep the hood taught. I would advise replacing it.
