IMHO if buying the car does not affect anything else important such as paying utility bills and the like then I see no problem.
Of course if your partner also wants something then you have to work it out.
At any rate I think it is important to be honest with one another. I only once after many discussions bought a car with out my [then] wife's support. I still believe I did the right thing when all things were considered, but then I would. However I do think it became an issue for the following five years I owned that car.
We are now divorced, and whilst the car was not the sole reason, we both agree it was the start. Be warned.
Priorities I find, are usually someone else's.
