Sloppy Gear Lever/Lost Gears

I've had Betsy now for about 4.5yrs, but since I have had her, there has been a small problem with gear selection, like I lose the ability to select any gear every now and again. I have traced the fault down to a migrating bush in the gear lever controls housing, found inside the tunnel. So Alfa in there wise wisdom say you can only order the whole gear change assembly (£130) for the V6 GTV, but for the 156 you can order just the gear lever housing (£14).

My question has anybody replaced this using, just the 156 gear lever housing, item 9 showing on EPER picture.

I'd like to know this too as I have some play in the main balljoint below the lever and the side bush. I greatly improved things by replacing the top hat bushes in the mechanism on top of the bell housing where the cables meet the gearbox. Have you done that - quite easy and cheap - see previous threads? However, from your pic I can see that the lever is disconnected by dint of the metal plate/lever on the right hand side having pulled through the block behind the lever base & therefore disconnecting from the metal balljoint. I think that should be held in place by a circlip on the left hand end of the metal cylinder that has pulled through the block. Is that your main problem?

Wear in mine has been exacerbated by the seized top hat bushes but I also found that the box for the tracker(that I had never bothered with) was floating around in the space under the gearlever gaitor and had been interfering with the lever movement so I have been heaving against it and presumably wearing things out as a consequence for several years ...

My problem is that the plastic housing has cracked, and the bellcrack & bush migrates from the plastic housing. Unfortunately it has nothing to do with the circlip, that is still in position!!!

Well I have ordered a new 156 housing PT# 46411550 (£14.36) and ball knuckle bush PT# 46470897 (£0.94) as opposed to the complete assembly which retails for £130!!!!!

There a good guide on alfa156.net about V6 Sloppy Gear Lever - Sloppy Gear Lever Alfa 156

I'll have Besty on the ramps next week to replace the housing, to get access you have to drop the exhaust. I'll let you know how I get on

This is my my 'to do' list as well, my gearstick is stiff at the moment - it doesn't return to the middle if you move it to one side ('top hat' bushes?) & occasional you can't find any gears. I'm interested to know how you get on :) Could I ask where you bought the parts from?

Received my new housing today, should hopefully fit next week, Have noticed that the housing that is split on my car has a part number, but is not shown in EPER for the GTV. The part number is exactly the same as the Alfa 156 housing, so in theory it will fit the V6 GTV.

My knuckle bush disappeared long ago, so I improvised and ended up slipping over some hose pipe, has worked so far, and not fell out like the designed bush!!!!

No, not yet. Hopefully this weekend if I can get into my mate garage to use his lift  Basically I will follow the alfa156.net thread, drop exhaust, then the tunnel, to get to the gear levert mechanism.

Auto part
Well i went a totally different route to sort this one out on my phase one.
Whilst i did an interior swap i put a hole saw thru either side of the tunnel so i could get a socket on either side of the bolt ??????????????
Undo the lower pivoy bolt and the two bolts on top remove the complete lever swapped it for one without play, refitted bolt well greased of coarse then the two in the top and all sorted.
Worked an absolute treat couple of rubber grommets to fill the holes all was dry in there so probably a good idea this way incase the seal of the lower panel cannot be remade ???
My mate thinks im a nutter but i think of it as a step in the rite direction.
Regards to all

Mission accomplished!!!!!! Got my car on my mates lift today. I can confirm that the 156 parts will fit the GTV V6 gear lever mechanism. To do the job took me about 4 hrs to complete, had to replace the majority of the exhaust nuts & bolts. I ended up dropping the exhaust from the manifolds to first silencer.

Any thoughts on how to remove the three retaining bolts as the nuts below are not captive ?

Toying with breaking out the dremil :wow: then glueing the nuts in a retained position for refitting the new part.

Or do I simply put her on the lift and go through the whole exhaust removal routine ? once the exhaust off is there an inspection panel ?

Question for SimonT: Did the knuckle bush (from the 156) fit into your GTV? (Item 4 - ePER screen - post#1)

Thanks

The answer is Yes, please read post #3. The setup I'm talking about is a V6 car, not sure about the Twinnie setup
