For years I used a budget halford one. Drive onto blocks of wood then raise the car as high as the jack could go (not very high....just about above the first notch on my axle stands). To raise it higher I had to use a thick piece of wood fitted on the jack round bit.
That was until the jack started loosing oil and when i got my gtv. See on the gtv, the front was ok to lift but the back was a pain. I ended up doing stupid things (using multiple pieces of wood) and the jack folded sideways, dropping the car.
That was the end of me using the jack, thanksfully as I was lucky not to be under the car (but just behind it). In any case. I bought an "ARCAN" jack off Costco. Low profile, high lift, 3tonnes...£83 inc.vat
BEST bit of kit i've bought in a while....very heavy (a good thing) and just well made. Incidentally, I have not been to any garages recently that do not have one lying about (ask autolusso south).
The clarke racing alluminium jacks have a tendency to loose nuts and **** oil quite quickly.
