I guess you are asking me about whether I think the best tyres should be on the rears (on a front wheel drive).
Strange thing is I know the theory, I used to practice it religiously on my A4 and before that on my Accord. I always bought new tyres in pairs, put the rears on the front and the "best" on the rear.
However, I have to say that after reading loads of reviews I put new Avon ZV5 tyres on the front of my spider and never got round to replacing the budget rears, which are as new.
I know, before all you tyre snobs get on to me, that Avons are considered mid range at best by some, but the ZV5 does have a really good write up and I have to say so far they have not let me down. I am most impressed. I was hell bent on Yokohamas and I do not think I could possibly have had better performance if they had won out. They DO have a really cool tread pattern, though and if I am honest that was part of the reasoning wanted them.
Anyway, back to the ZV5s. I sometimes pull out of side roads a little too quickly. I sometimes boy race off the lights. Shock horror I sometimes throw the thing into a bend and hope that it will come out the other side (last time I remember nearly getting it significantly wrong I estimated my entry speed at sixty but in fact it was eighty, and my other half never complained once, she just went "wheeeeee! That was fun!" ...... bless.) No skidding, no fear of not pulling out of side roads and great traction and road holding are the net result.
My one caveat, though, is that my car is a summer car and I only drive in the wet if I get caught out in it. I can still give it some welly though, but I am far more sensible when it is greasy.
So in summary these tyres are working great for me and if the budgets had made even the slightest indication of letting go they would be changed as quick as saying "lend's your knife".
I think a lot of tyre choice is snobbery. I think that unless you drive everywhere like Clarkson or go on track days most of us need a tyre that feels safe and lasts. I cannot vouch for my tyres lasting, not had them long enough, but they sure do make me feel safe. Even those budgets on the rear feel good, and they have got a great tread pattern that looks SOoooo good from behind.
Good treads, stainless exhaust pipes and a shiny red arse. I look good on the road!
